For Whom The Bell Tolls?

For whom the bell tolls? That question is often asked when we learn of "The Master's" calling in satisfaction of his edict; a remembrance of the inevitability of death, signifying that we have arrived at our destination in this life. His cataloging of our live's journey, though paved with all our accomplishments and materials accumulation would be reduced to the 'Dust to dust, Ashes to ashes' from our beginning to our end.

In our Gouyave, the cadence of the bells as heard coming from the steeples of the churches representing the various religious denomination, is interrupted only by a pause; enough to reflect on the transient nature of this life and the one that awaits us as we journey to the afterlife of the unknown.

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we in Gouyave, particularly the expatriates of Edward Street can answer this question as we are made aware that the bell tolls for no other than Mrs. Oliver, fondly known to all of us as Miss Precious or Mammy.

So appropriate a name for this special lady, I can say without any reservation whatsoever and with a sense of pride and admiration that she lived up to that name with all the subtleties of character, personality, charm and witt. But most importantly, Miss Precious gave us over three generations of children with exemplatory character to follow in her footsteps and preserve the Precious name.

Miss Precious was there for all of us in our early years when we needed guidance to chart our own journey and we will miss her dearly.

Thank you Miss Precious for being there when we needed many more 'Mammies' like you.

May your soul rest in peace.
