I see that the RYA have proposed to ISAF that catamaran sailing is dropped from the ISAF youth sailing from 2009.
They propose that the catamaran class is dropped in favour of the 29er. They propose that the 420 class for both boy & girl is also retained as separate events. The request is hidden in ISAF submission 129-07 which the RYA seems to have not seen fit to share with sailors in the UK.
This means that the only way for prospective catamaran sailors to be developed through the RYA youth programme would be via monohulls. I suggest that people who disagree with this position make their position known to the RYA.
Theres a lively debate on the Y&Y Forum at
What do the RYA think they are playing at?
Nick ... It is even worse than that !?
take a look at the following link ...
The proposal by the RYA seems to be to dump all Cats from the 2012 Olympics.
Online petition is here, please sign it:
The wording was negotiated on the Y&Y forum & Jon Worthington set it up.
Please email it to all of your sailing contacts.
What are they thinking!!!! The ISAF should promote any form of sailing, by dropping the cat, they are not helping all sailors. How do they think to help the cat with this kind of ****, we are already having problems to promote the different types of catamaran, both to sailors as to possible sponsors. This will sure not help!
Please all sign the petition, and maybe we have to send an (angry) letter to the ISAF!
Keep up the presure ... the following is a quick update taken from the RYA web site:
the attention that these two proposals have received from the Cat community in the UK and overseas, the RYA Council will debate the issues and review its decision at their next meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday 3 October. Council members will be provided with a selection of representative emails, letters and web forum addresses as well as this paper.
Representatives of the RYA are planning to meet Rob White and Brian Phipps on Monday 8 October in the late afternoon/early evening, venue TBC but probably London. Should representatives of the UK umbrella catamaran organisations and the Hobie and SL16 classes wish to attend could they email email@example.com so that we can let interested parties know the exact time and venue.

Couldn't the UKIDA make a formal representation to the RYA ? ... I'm not sure who or how, but we must represent one of the biggest cat' class associations.
