Spraying a Dart

So ive come up with a masterplan today my wife and I finnaly came up with a name for our dart and whilst not revealing that yet it will require a colour change to the hulls. Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone know where it can be done? and if its been done any ideas on cost?

Paul Wakelin sprayed a red boat Pink at Stokes Bay about 6 or so years ago- It still looks good.

Re: Spraying a Dart

Well sounds good so I must persue this. No point hiding it my idea is to call the boat "Thundercat" have the hull sprayed black replace the waterline with a red line and get the thundercat logo on each bow. No for those of you that dont know who the "Thundercats" were.

Paul Chatfield sprayed a Dart Black once about 20 years ago with luminous graphics (called The Dangerous Brothers) - It looked really smart at the 87 Parkstone Nationals until it broke up and ...sank! so make sure the hulls are sound before you spray them. Black will look smart - I was actually thinking for asking for an all black special when I next get a new one!

Thundercat? Sounds like a legendary plan. However, it will be easy to spot if you've jumped the gun at the start, as the race officer will only have to look out for the logo!

Re: Spraying a Dart

I wouldnt worry about that Ive only just completed [sic] my first event at Parkstone! Id more think of the advantage that they wont all go home and leave me still going round!

Hi

Ive sprayed a few boats - setting up to do my Merlin soon - as a low wind alternative to the dart.

Find a man with a spray booth with low bake oven and use a good quality 2 pack paint - flat and mop it back afterwards and it looks factory! -

Good quality 2 pack will last ages and be almost as hard waring as marine paint for loads less $$$.

We have a man over the road with a brand new oven thats going to do the merlin for me - he sprays our race cars too - top top job - shout if you get stuck and Im sure he would give you a price to spray the hulls

Cheers

Conor

Re: Spraying a Dart

Conner,

Thanks for the advice. Ive restored several boats in the past but never sprayed one what do you mean by "flat and mop it back"?

Best regards

Re: Spraying a Dart

Flat and mop -

The original hull is gell coat laid into a super smooth mould - so when it pops out its smooth and bright -

When you paint its very hard not to get small imperfections in the surface - these are often refered to as orange peel - you can see its been painted.

You flat this back with 300 wet and dry and then use a spinning mop with a polishing compound on say G50 bit like T cut - this removes the orange peel effect and makes the surface super smooth - just like it came out of a mould.

If you get the prep right and the temperature of spraying right you can reduce the need for this process altogether.

Cant do Sunday - have negotiated for Parkstone - you coming for the take 2 ?
