World Without Stars

A quick note to answer a question in the review of Poul Anderson's World Without Stars. The comment:

…a technology that has allowed our human heroes to become, well, immortal … (More confusion is added when, despite his so-called "immortality," the story is purported to have been taken from the narrator's "posthumous" diaries. Wha?)

The answer, from Tor (emphasis added):
There’s an antithanatic drug which people take at adulthood and thereafter live forever unless killed. None of the things that kill people now will kill them except massive trauma — you can drown them or shoot them with lasers or crush them under broken spaceships, but otherwise they’ll live pretty much forever.
