I think it is a very reasonable request. FWIW, I already am committed to
this 1% and began doing it in Jan, 2002. I would like all other RSs to dig
deep and do the same.

The idea is that the days ahead will be so trying that only one in one hundred will make it through to the society of peace that will follow. (For what it's worth, curiously, the present membership of the LDS church (~11 million in 2000) is close to 1% of the total earth's population (6 billion). The number 144,000 is just a little more than 1% of 11 million. I don't mean to imply that the Mormons hold an exclusivity on being qualified as 'remnant,' for though there are indeed many valiant souls among them [as well as the opposite], there are also a great many found outside the circles of the LDS church. It is, however, an interesting manifestation of the idea of a tithe of a tithe twice over.)
Whether or not this 1% figure is meant to be literal or metaphorical, the idea of a tithe of a tithe being associate with the remnant is one that has rung true to my heart over the years as I have reflected on it.
The other day, the thought struck me that this tithe of a tithe concept could be a primary answer to the question of how we could fund the expenses of operating our organization/government.
Each member of the organization would be expected, as a matter of obligation (not compulsion), to donate 1% of their net income. These funds would be earmarked to meet expenses directly related to the operation of the organization.
In the ideal government, the people are responsible to such an extent that a mere 1% would be all that would be needed to manage the affairs of government.
