Exterior advert adhesive

Hi all.
Have obtained original paper adverts for 308...what did LT/other bus companies use to stick them on the busses...surely not water based wallpaper paste!

What should i use??

My bus number (if any): Rm66 and 308

Re: Exterior advert adhesive

Hi Duane

I really should know the answer to your question as I used to get on well with the Advert Fixer at Mortlake and had many conversations with him whilst he was on his ladder pasting adverts onto buses. The one thing I do remember was that whatever he was using was far more `fluid `than one might expect and it certainly didn`t have the viscosity of wallpaper paste. Soon learnt not to stand in the `splash area` whilst he was pasting!

I wouldn`t be surprised if it`s the same stuff used to fix paper adverts to tunnel and platform walls at Underground stations. Maybe if someone reading this either works for - or knows someone who works for - London Underground there could be a lead to the section that maintains adverts.......

Re: Exterior advert adhesive

Many years ago I was asked to fix some adverts to one of Continental Pioneer's RT. I used wallpaper paste. the adverts stayed on for about an hour....

Re: Exterior advert adhesive

A question i had asked before, wallpaper paste is fine for inside a vehicle as thats how i've applied mine. However exterior use as mentioned won't last long, adverts back in the day were replaced more often and they must have used something more longer lasting to apply to buses. I too have some original LT paper ones to use but will get them reproduced onto vinyl so they last longer. Price quoted a few years back was around £400 for the printing, applying onto bus. Any additional artwork would be on top of this. At the time i was fishing for quotes, however more important things first to do to the bus.

Re: Exterior advert adhesive

You could try 3M Spray Mount (blue aerosol) or Photo Mount (red aerosol) for fixing paper adverts - spray evenly onto all of paper (not bus) and let residue evaporate off a bit before fixing to prevent staining - not cheap but excellent stuff - uses lighter fuel or brake cleaner as a solvent rather than water so should hopefully stand up a bit longer to the weather ?

Re: Exterior advert adhesive

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, it looks like we might have to go down the road of getting these copied (that im afraid is expensive) bearing in mind these adverts wernt exactly cheap either.

Like you Mark we have used wallpaper paste for the interior adverts i think for now the adverts will stay put in my house until such time as financies allow. There are other things that need to be done so not majorly important. Our next task will probably be seat refurbishment..........

I've used Essex Sign and print before to make my large printed stickers for vehicles (not my bus though) and always been good cost effective Service and cheaper then I first thought.

https://www.essexsignandprint.co.uk/print/stickers/

I've mostly used the Low tack ones because they there usually only on the vehicle for not longer then a weekend but they do proper printed vinyl too for longer term.

I've always done the graphics myself which makes it even cheaper but not by much.

For what you want i suspect you will have to send them the posters you have and they will recreate them for you. If you visit the link above click the option you want it will give you a quote for the size you want and with them re doing the artwork!

** update **

I just looked up for quote for one poster at 50x70cm (guessing size of poster) Matt printed vinyl with them doing the artwork it quoted me under £9(not including VAT and shipping)
